Guidance for Towers regarding
Safeguarding Children (under 18s) and Vulnerable Adults

  1. Every Tower Captain should have contact with their Parish Safeguarding Officer, or Incumbent if there is no PSO, to ensure that the PSO is aware of the nature of the bellringing practices and activities especially with regard to young people and vulnerable adults.
If a DBS (formerly CRB) disclosure is required the PSO will organise this through the Diocese.
  2. The Tower Captain, (or person running the practice) should always ensure best practice:
    • Always have at least two adults present when teaching children or vulnerable adults, at least one of whom should have been DBS checked.
    • Encourage a parent to attend the practice where possible at least initially.
  3. The Guild Statement and Policy should be displayed in every tower.  It contains details of any training that might be required.
  4. If you have any queries contact Mary Garner (Safeguarding Officer for the Guild) on 01728 746097 or email
